Italian pilot Falco told about meeting with a Russian pilot during a routine flight in the sky over the Baltic Sea. Falco noted that the Russian ace made several dangerous combinations – he came from behind and suddenly appeared from the blind spot, forcing the Italian to change course in a panic. The NATO soldier was already preparing for an air battle, but then he again discovered that the Su-30 had disappeared.

Back at the base, Falco stated that after the stress he had experienced, he no longer wanted to fly. He also admitted that he did not expect such maneuverability and speed from the aircraft, which he considered to be slightly modernized old Soviet technology. It turned out that it is much more nimble than the vaunted American fighters, and the electronic warfare system makes NATO equipment practically defenseless.

How does this technology work?

The idea is to create a layer of plasma around the aircraft that can absorb or deflect radar waves, making the aircraft less visible to radar detection systems.

While the concept of plasma stealth technology has been studied and researched for decades, practical implementation and its effectiveness remain subjects of ongoing debate and research within the defense community. 

Some challenges include the energy requirements for sustaining the plasma, controlling its density and distribution, and ensuring compatibility with the aircraft’s overall design and functionality.

In traditional stealth aircraft, such as the F-22 Raptor or the B-2 Spirit, radar-absorbent materials and special shaping are used to minimize radar reflection. 

However, the plasma stealth technology takes a different approach by using a cloud of ionized gas to achieve similar stealth characteristics.

Tan Chang, a scientist working on the project, highlighted in a published paper that the new technology offers several benefits, such as a straightforward design, adjustable power range, and high plasma density. 

Tan and his colleagues from the Plasma Technology Centre of the Xian Aerospace Propulsion Institute, China’s major aerospace defense contractor, suggest that this innovative solution could soon be applied to different military aircraft to meet China’s increasing need for advanced military capabilities.

Tan’s team has tested two types of plasma stealth devices. One coats radar-prone areas with a radioactive isotope, emitting rays to ionize the air and create a dense plasma layer scattering radar signals. 

The other uses high-frequency electricity to ionize the gas outside the aircraft, forming a plasma region. “Both methods have been flight-tested and proven successful,” wrote Tan’s team.

Tan’s team has devised a device using electron beam discharge to generate large areas of confined plasma, a method revealed to the public for the first time, said the SCMP report.

Unlike other methods like closed radio frequency plasma discharge devices, this approach separates the plasma from the generator, allowing more flexibility in designing cavities to suit different aircraft structures.

The team noted that plasma generated by electron beams offers better adjustability, energy efficiency, reduced power requirements, and lighter weight, making it suitable for practical use. Ground tests of prototypes have shown the feasibility of their design.

“We expect this technology to be implemented in China soon,” added Tan and his colleagues.
